Midweek Musings: Little Black Dress

an LBD is a form of dynamite: it'll cause an explosion.

What is it about an impenetrable black dress, the icon of good style, the mystery of men and women alike, that inevitably causes double takes and dropped jaws every little turn it makes? Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn made it famous, while Elizabeth Hurley and Cher made it modern. The beauty of the LBD is its two flawless traits: (1) the LBD is universally flattering, and (2) the LBD is accessible to everyone. I personally love a little black dress because it is like a blank canvas. There are a million ways to make it fancy or plain, sassy or sweet, uptown or downtown. Nearly every clothing store carries some version of it. The LBD is personal style's best friend, its protege. It is the best form of confidence you can buy because of the flattering fit and the unending imagination that ensues in accessorizing. As One Direction sings, "Little Black Dress just walked into the room, makin' heads turn, so I can't stop looking at you."

PS: My favorite LBD accessory is a long strand of pearls a la Audrey Hepburn or a denim jacket.
